When interviewing new DBA candidates, it's pretty easy to ask what certification they have. In fact, I would take an Oracle DBA certification and two years experience over a college degree. That shows me the person works very hard to improve himself (ususally male, not always) and make the best use of talents he has. One DBA I hired was studying for his OCP exam and could recite sections of his study materials from memory. Talk about an on-the-spot problem solver! A junior DBA we hired has as one of his MBO goals is to get his certification in a year.

Having the OCP listed as an accomplishment makes justifying a pay raise or bonus much easier for the manager. I may have given a DBA a 10% raise vs. the company COLA of 5% just because of the marketplace. Much above that and I'll need some political ammunition.

Then there are somepeople on this board I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole. I wouldn't care if Mr. "wombat" had a certificate from the Pope. I expect a miminum of people skills to work with internal and external customers.

Your figure of $9000 might be a little high in the Chicago area. But if I had to give a figure, $7000 wouldn't be unreasonable for a salary bump. It's hard to extricate the OCP as a separate element of someone who is going from a Jr. DBA to a Sr. DBA. The OCP seems to accelerate the process.
