Diff between db_name and instance_name?

I am just trying to setup an init.ora file under oracle 8.1.5.
It has two parameters,  DB_NAME and INSTANCE_NAME.
I usually just set those to the same values and everything
goes well.  I was just wondering if anyone knows what
the difference between the two parameters was and why you
would set them differently.
