DBA:- Database migration to new server

Hi

I need to migrate a database (8.0.5 Oracle) from one host(DEC 4.0 OSF) to another. I know of creating database on the new host and export/import data into this new database. But i am wondering if there could be a simpler way of accomplishing this task.

Is the following method feasible? ( and is this good?)

• Cold-Backup the Database on the origin Host ( Host1) (let's call the dump as Origin_DB_Dump.tar.gz) and disallow users from accessing the system anymore. ( Cold back-up backs up, control files, log files, datafiles, *.ora files under 'PFILE' Home and ORACLE_HOME directories.
• Uncompress & Untar this dump on the new host.
• Assuming the new host has Oracle already installed on it, and having listeners running, can i now say, Database is ready for use on this new host.
• if this method works fine, i do not need to worry about creating database, datafiles, rollback segments etc.
• concerns of the method.
  • Expanding the cold back-up dump will overwrite the already existing *.ora files on the new host. eg. tnsnames.ora files of existing database and the migrated database should be merged on the destination host.
  • We need to be sure that the names of data files used in the database being migrated are not used up by the already existing databases on the destination host.

I would be glad to hear your suggestions. I would also appreciate if could mention some of the tools available on the market ( shareware or comercial) for database migration and your experience with them.
