We are running Oracle 8.1.5 patch 1 on a Dual PIII 500 Mz with 2Gb Ram.
We also have the 2.2.12smp version of the kernel.
The database have an average of 340 conections. All the adjusts to
kernel parameters were done. In a first moment the size of SGA was 1,3
Gb an it gave us some problems the size of free memory start to shrink
while the cached size was increased. When the free memory finished, the
cached memory was reduced till the moment the machine stopped. After a
while the system came up again. This situation ocurred a lot of times.
Then we reduced SGA to a value near 600 Mb. The behaviour was basically
the same, free memory disapeared and cached memory started to shrink
till a value near 315 Kb. After this it started to grow again till 450K
and to go down to 315 Kb.
Does anyone have an explanation to this behaviour ?
Can we do something ?
Tia.
