ARCH won't start ***URGENT***

I'm having a problem whose answer should be obvious, but I don't see it.

Yesterday, an offline backup script that I was testing forced a database down with shutdown abort (dumb) and now I can not get the ARCH process to start....

I was running with archivelog and had the init<sid>.ora file parameters set to do automatic archiving. So far, all has worked fine, including after some power crashes recently.

Nothing was seen in the alert log and I could find no other trace files to indicate the problem.....

I finally got the database up by going to noarchivelog and stopping any automatic archiving. I don't like to run that way.

I'm grasping for straws now. Any help will be graciously appreciated.
