You mention two different techniques here - replication and standby database. Replication has both databases available for use, standby database only has one available for normal use. Which one to use depends on your business needs which you haven't outlined sufficiently for us to recommend one over the other. As for the level of network consumption, this will vary from site to site and even application to application within one site. What network speed do you have? How frequently do you need to replicate? What data volumes will you be replicating etc. etc. You really need to test this with your application to see if the performance meets your needs.
