what a fun situation 8.1 has created. they should have called it oracle9. the bottom line is that you basically cannot install 8.1 and 8.0 products on the same machine reliably. if you install them on separate machines, generally speaking, they will inter-operate.
the dual-home business is evidently because the same library names exist in both versions, but they are internally incompatible. the problem is that you are likely to have both homes on your search path; therefore it doesn't add much value. yecch.
just to invite flames, i have advised my firm not to deploy oracle8i (8.1.x)
until this incompatibleness is better-explained or solved by oracle.
