Upper and Lower in Oracle Lite

I am using Oracle lite to support an offline, replicated version of an application that normally runs against Oracle 7.3.

Everything runs fine with the exception of any SQL that includes an upper or lower case command to convert retrieve text to upper or lower case.

The SQL runs and produces the correct results but it is very, very slow - we're talking orders of magnitude. If I drop the upper/lower command it is back to full speed.

Does anyone have experience of this problem and/or know of a solution.
