Are you talking about the
Archivelogmode or Noarchivelogmode
If you do not want to archive then
I guess there is a command
like Alter database or alter system (couldn't remember exactly, see your sql reference manual)
where you can set these values so that your system will become nonarchivemode (nologging if what I thinking is correct). hth
