how to start oracle services without password file

I can't start the OracleStartSID service on NT 4. The OracleServiceSID starts ok but the other service comes back with the message 'Please enter a password for the DBA account'. I want to start the db using the start service after a cold backup.

I'm not using a password file, but have set up ORA_SID_DBA and ORA_SID_OPER groups and a local oracle user which along with other settings allows me to connect to server manager without a password.

I've got a feeling that the start service is looking for a password?

Any help appreciated...
