Don't tell data modellers how to do their job, unless you are a more senior data modeller.  Instead, gather the business requirements for the system in question including the functionality required, the data volumes, and the response times.  Any good data modeller will be able to produce a good design based on a properly defined set of requirements.



Why are you worried about join times, just specify the overall response requirement.
