Q: Using 8 bit charset without NLS_LANG?

Hi experts,

my databse uses an 8 bit character set (ISO 8859-1). Is ist possible to retrieve data on clients without setting the environment variable NLS_LANG to the appropriate value? If yes, how can it be done?
