Well, in short:

  1. read carefully Oracle Install guide
  2. download from blackbox Java-engine, install it
  3. start X-client (motif-compatible! e.g. Gnome failed), start runInstall
  4. select product to install (Server), install without creating database (crete only SQL-script)
  5. apply Oracle patch (8.1.5.1 or so)
  6. recompile Oracle binary file (you may need add path to Oracle-libs to /etc/ls.so.conf, then execute ldconfig)
  7. create database using SQL-script
  8. do some additional tuning (auto-startup db, listener etc)
  9. take time to think "Is it woth?"
