8.0.5 _is_much_ better in terms of installation and stability. I've got
installed 8.0.5 as soon as it was out on RadHat 5.2 in a snap (following a
couple of fixes described in accompanying README).
I got a 8.0.5.1.0 patch installed in a blink as well...
Al the same for any DB or network activity, creation, manipulation...
Now, tried 8.1.5 - a nightmare, and I know what I am talking about: I am not a Linux expert, but I do know my stuff under Oracle and other Unixes since years....
I agree it must have been someone after a drunk night deciding to build an Installer in Java... Do they intend to have next version run in a browser, so that you can install Oracle in your office from a Pacific island, via HTTP? Who wants to do that (although I like the idea on working off an island) ? Wit previous Oracle installer it was even possible to script your own custom-made, unattended installs. Now, I suppose we start all over again with OUI (or does it workj with old script syntax, I doubt).
I think I will wait for other people's experiences and give it a try after a couple initial patches and RedHat 6.1 this time, it may save me a week or so...
I am afraid they're treating Linux port kind of many people treat Linux itself (hey, I am not taking any particular camp here) - just a freeware: good luck and you're on your own. But then, the fact is there _Are_ many different Linux distributions out there, so now what? Does Oracle have to test all of them, just to expect that something would change in the next release or some other group of people come out with "their" distribution? This is the problem with Linux, and you dont find a similar issue with a vendor-specific Unix (even not with MS Win NT), you name it, HP, Sun, IBM, Digital or any... I am always asking myself why people dont work more on standardizing Linux distribution, paths, libs, etc. which would solve most of the Linux current headaches.
But then, they could not get any money out of it anymore, could they? And we're talking Open Source community here where one is free to do what one likes, including installing packages from one distribution onto another, patching kernel, moving files around...
