The advice may be something to do with a feature of some operating systems (I think AIX is the one that I heard this about) that can use sparse file techniques.

One unintended consequence of this was that on compression and decompression all the 'unused' space in the file was somehow thrown away, and the file that cam back was not the file that went out. This was certainly reported as a problem a few years ago - but I would be quite surprised if it hasn't been addressed.
