  Look closely at the "garbage". Is it the actual html? You need to determine

if that version of browser supports the tags in the html. Welcome to the web, where browsers still don't support what the competition does (and that goes both
ways...)

You can use javascript to determine what browser is displaying the page and then
use the appropriate tags for that browser.

Get a good html book, and dig in.
