One thing you should do is obtain and check references. Any vendor's salespeople MAY exaggerate the abilities of the product they are selling. As an aside, This is so prevalent that the United States Supreme Court passed down a decision which effectively stated that it was legal for salespeople to make exaggerated claims and that such exaggerations are not grounds for canceling a contract!

That being the case -- get references and check them. If a vendor can't provide references you have no way of knowing if the product will work or break under your workload. I know that you can get good references for both Informix and Oracle. I have no idea if that is the case for PostgresSQL.
