The reason that dba_free_space does not change is that space is allocated to tables in large chunks called extents. You won't see the results of adding rows to your table until you fill one extent and cause another to be allocated.

You can use the ANALYZE TABLE command to have Oracle count up the bytes used by a particular table if that helps.
