partitioning

hello everybody,
there is a chapter about partitioning of large tables in the oracle8i documentation. Is it possible, to use partitioning across multiple servers for load balancing reasons or is this feature bound to a database on a single server. Is it possible to set up a general guideline when to use distributed databases, when to use parallel execution and when to use partitioning? Thanks
