Ok, I took a test db and did the following:
1 Alter database backup controlfile to trace
2 shut down normal
3 edit my init.ora to create new controlfiles, say A and B
4 startup nomount
5 read my alert file, it records where my init.ora thinks the new
controlfiles should be, A and B (however they are not there because I have
not created them yet)
6 edit my init.ora file and call my control file C and D, not A and B
7 in server manager, create controlfile..... from trace file - makes the
control file where the init.ora say they should be
7 look at alert file and see the 'create controlfile ....' command,
however the alert file does not indicate the controlfile is no longer A and
B but now is C and D.
So the only place to go and see where the controlfiles were created is in the init.ora. Ok,ok I'm stretching things, and I know what your saying, however my long winded point is that the init.ora is really the best place to go to see where the control files were created and the alert file just reflects what the init.ora said during startup nomount. (I don't remember this question on the OCP, so it may be a mute point).
