We use both ACCESS 97 and Oracle 8. The performance of an ACCESS MDB is by far better than the one of Oracle 8 accessed through ODBC

But ACCESS 97 MDBs have the tendency to go corrupt or grow without now significant reason towards the limit of 1 Gigabyte.

I do not know any way to backup an open ACCESS 97 MDB. In Oracle 8, hot backups are possible but the backup utilities are very very difficult to use.
