sqlplus error

Hi,
I just installed oracle 8i database. When I used sqlplus8i from where the database in installed it works fine.

On client machine, I edited the tnsnames.ora file and I did tnsping (SID) and it gives me OK. Client are running sqlplus 8. Now when we try to connect it to the database (SID) it gives me error

ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name

Any help is appreciated
