Alert Log doesn't exist!

Help! My database isn't creating an alert log.  BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST is okay
and the Oracle trace files are being written there okay, but no alert log.
(I've bounced the database and switched log files etc. to ensure that
something should be written).



Can anyone help me?  (Oracle 8.0.4 on Win NT)
