Understanding installation of 8i

I have the following 4 products that I am trying to install: Oracle 8i, Oracle 8i Client, Oracle Enterprise Manager 2.0.4, and Oracle WebDB. The computer these are being installed on is running NT 4.0 Server.

I have several questions about the model under which these things run.

1. Once all 4 products are installed on the server, do any of the products have to be installed on other workstations to so that a client application on one of those workstations can connect to the databases on the server? For example, does the Oracle 8i Client product need to be installed on every workstation which will access the databases on the server?
2. The documentation for each product makes several references to the "Oracle home". My understanding is that the Oracle home is just the directory where you install the Oracle server software. If that is true, then how can you have more than one Oracle home? I mean, what are you going to do, install the Oracle software multiple times in every directory which will be an Oracle home? If that is so, do you have to install all 4 products once for each Oracle home? What exactly is Oracle home anyway?

I am asking because, for example, the Oracle WebDB documentation says that WebDB needs to be installed in its own Oracle home. Does that mean installing Oracle 8i, 8i Client, etc again in another directory? How many copies of Oracle will I have on the server? Received on Thu Jul 29 1999 - 00:24:24 CDT
