It's not a question of boring anyone. You asked a fundamental question that has an 'obvious' answer. This doesn't mean you are stupid - it probably means that you are looking at it from the wrong angle. You were right to ask the question but you don't really need help to answer it, you need help to point you in the right direction, i.e. other documentation.
