My opinion, based on experience of going the consultant bit, is that you new a few days up front to make some important decisions, then a competent but not extreme level of skill to walk it through, with the occasional sanity check from your consultant.

Since I am probably too far away to be a serious contender for the design job, you can assume that this is an impartial view.
