Re: alert_sid.log doesn't work

check your init<sid>.ora file for the parameter BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST - that is where the alert log will be. As far as I know there is nothing that needs done to enable logging, it is done automatically. You should see messages for startup, shutdown, errors, log switches, etc.
