Implicit vs. Explicit cursors

Anyone have some info on the performance advantages of using explicit. I know it's there but want to understand why better. I have seen a few articles but can't put my finger on any right now. I have had one person tell me the performance hit is greater on NT than Unix. Anyone care to take at shot as to the truth of this?
