Home -> Community -> Usenet -> c.d.o.server -> Re: Converting from Oracle7.3.2 to Oracle8.0.4
The Oracle installation manual documents how to migrate from a v7
database to v8. It gives both options, import/export and the migration
utility from the installation media. Obviously the import/export is a
longer process, especially if the db is large. I have recently been
toying around with the migration utility from 7.3.2 to 8.0.5 on a test
server, and it has been anything BUT smooth. If you choose to use the
migration utility, definitely do the research and legwork upfront.
Make sure you have enough space in your system tablespace; make sure
you have enough space in the filesystem for the system TS to expand if
necessary; make sure you have enough room in the filesystem to install
the Oracle 8 binaries; etc etc etc. I gave it a minimum amount of
review first, and have had problem after problem. I am currently
reloading my entire system from backup so I can start all over again
... my init.ora file was incorrect, my system datafile header was
invalid, my alter database convert command failed with internal error
600, blah blah blah and so on. And this was my 2nd attempt after
reading the installation manual. Maybe somebody else here has been
successful with the migration utility, but the one group in my company
that has done a successful upgrade from v7 to v8 went the import/export
route, and accepted the extended outage.

Roy
