Symbolic Links During Oracle Server Upgrade

Hi All,

I am in the process of reviewing the procedure necessary for upgrading Oracle 7.3.3 to Oracle 7.3.4. Part of the procedure involves removing any symbolic link references in the ORACLE_HOME directory and replacing them with the actual files they pointed to. All of our data files under the dbf/ directory are configured this way, however. Some questions and comments:

  1. Why is this necessary during the upgrade procedure?
  2. If I do not have the disk space to move the files, can I not perform the upgrade?
  3. Is this simply Oracle being conservative and making sure we don't have any invalid links during the upgrade, which would potentially cause problems?
  4. Are there any documents or FAQs that I can reference in regards to this upgrade or Oracle upgrades in general?

I would like to avoid any 'gotchas' regarding this procedure if at all possible.

Thanks in advance!
