Solaris vs. NT for web server/database

Hi,

We have a web application which is being converted from MS Access to Oracle. There will potentially be 600-1000 concurrent users, though I'm not sure what type of activity it will be (I'm pretty sure it won't be OLTP, probably mostly read-only transactions). It will also be running an Oracle webserver. (Sorry for the lack of details, but that's all I know).

The decision we have to make is NT or Solaris. I'm biased, but I'm thinking it's a no-brainer in favor of Solaris. We have a Sun 3500 system priced out at about $60K. If NT can handle something like this, what kind of ballpark figure should we expect? If NT, would we need 2 machines (1 for the webserver, 1 for db). We have a site license for Oracle, so that cost isn't in the picture.

Thanks for any input,

Jerry
