Hi,

We backup and restore some instances directly from exp to tape (using 'file=/dev/tapedevice'). It works quite well.

The only disadvantage of this is that you have to peel off data from the tape with 'imp'. Writing to a named pipe would be useful if you want the data to be in a portable (cpio, tar) format.
