Hello Kathy,

We have tried out sending mails from the Oracle database   8.0.4 from HP-UX server. It was successful

I can try giving you the overall picture of how it works -

  1. A daemon program listed in the Oracle Developers Guide - daemon.pc should be listening continuously on the HP server on a particular DBMS_PIPE.
  2. Oracle trigger should write the contents of the mail into a particular file, say /mnt/xxx/file.txt And the trigger should write the foll into the pipe using the dbms_pipe() utility as - mail /mnt/xxx/file.txt
  3. Once a message is queued in the pipe, daemon which is listening should execute dbms_pipe.receive_message() to receive message. Once this is done, the daemon will execute the message as a command on UNIX. From here on, UNIX will send mail to the users.
Note : Configuring UNIX is done in /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
daemon.pc program is already present in Oracle Developers
Guide book.
Only pending thing from your side is trigger coding.

Best of Luck,
Vinod.
