Thanks all for the replies on this one.

I have seen the tests (PC Week, et. al.) that indicate NT outperforms Linux/Apache as a server (in many cases) and like NT for the GUI, but have seen evidence that Linux outperforms as a platform for Oracle. So.... I guess I'll do both in parallel (i.e., load both on the machine, but on different disks) and do primary development on the Linux side since I'm expecting the DB response time to be critical. If I do server-side code as CGI I can probably get pretty far with minimal differences between the two implementations. Then maybe some issues may arise that make the choice more obvious.

It seems to me that both OSs are viable. However, even though I've used Windows since 2.0, I'm not comfortable with the notion of a single-user server (i.e., multiple developers can't log into it).

The memory requirements between OAS 3 and 4 seem drastic. This one will be tough to decide. Perhaps prototyping in CGI is the best way to go, then migrating the code to the OAS environment and doing some testing for performance. I'm sure this has been done - it'd be nice to see the results.
