Make sure you have all the Openwindows and CDE recommended patches installed, but in the end, you should probably stop using svrmgrm as its been End of Life'd.
If you insist on running a GUI, you'll be happy to know that Oracle has a Java version of Enterprise Manager on the way. Unfortunately the the current version on OTN is Win32 only and I'm not sure if it ships with 8.1.x for Solaris.

If you've got perl installed you might consider Andy Duncan's Perl/Tk based tool.
