You have to check the conformance level of the ODBC driver you are using. I found that the open link drivers are reasonably OK.
Just for your information: I've developed Oraxcel and Oracle to Excel bridge. Perhaps you can consider using Oraxcel to solve your Oracle connectivity problems. Oraxcel is a full featured addin for Excel and does not use ODBC!
