ORA-04031 - Bad shared_pool management on 7.2.3 + HP-UX?

Has anyone else noticed this, or knows it's a problem?

On 7.2.3 on HP-UX, a fairly large db has thousands of tiny updates and inserts thrown at it - all properly wrapped in transactions. The shared pool never seems to be managed properly by PMON/SMON (whichever does the job), and eventually, the process dies with a

ORA-04031 - unable to allocate 488 bytes of shared memory ("unknown object","sga heap","library cache")

Any ideas?
