backup question

Hi,

I am writing a unix shellscript to do a cold backup of a midsize database (+/- 8G). I wanted to use cpio for archiving datafiles on a tape. When I do so, cpio wines that the archive is bigger as 2G and stops.

How -in what 'format'- do you store large files on a tape ? Is my cpio old ?
