It take it that the key differenciator is the delete of the whole table content prior to the load. If this is not done the load performs well.

If this is the case then I can only asume oracle is having problems navigating index and data where space is allocated and there is no content. I have had my suspicions in this are before.

Could you extract the data, then truncate the table, leaving a reset data table and indexes; then if the load is unsuccessful truncate again and reload the first extract.

Also what did you see as the datafile io situation.
