Sorry about putting tongue before reading all your information. I am so embarassed.
I saw NT a supidly rumped to a solution before seeing all the data.

I suppose you are using things like top or proctool to isolate the unix heavy hitters? Are they actually oracle sessions?

Additional questions:

  1. What applications are being served.
  2. Did you say what version of oracle you were running?
  3. I just read the other response to your query, related to JDBC, it does sound plausible, but why would it drive cpu high?
  4. Have you thought of switching to MTS? MTS is appropriate for high volume, quick, OLTP type applicaitons.
  5. When you say you are using db-link, does that mean somehow not passing thru the listener? In other words one tcp connection is as good as another. Oracle 8i uses prespawned handlers, which can reduced connection times?
  6. Could "batch" type processes be also running (locally via ipc) and hogging the cpu?
  7. How many instances are on the unix box?

Again I am sorry for putting my foot in my mouth, your configuration seems entirely scaled properly.
