I'm also a bit confused. 7.3 documentation is not very consistent with that
clue. Also it contains several other annoying errors.
In theory, shutdown immediate should checkpoint all datafiles so they are
not left in "fuzzy" state.
On the other hand, I would prefer not to verify it is really sufficient for
backup purposes on production databases. So before cold backup I shutdown
db with immediate priority, stop SQL*Net listeners (if another instances
don't need them), startup in restricted mode and shutdown normal just after
and start SQL*Net.
