Esoteric is a good choice of word.
I would guess that this is just a poor choice
of words. I think it should read
> "A checkpoint identifies a redo log record such that all
> changes prior to the __redo log record__ pointed to by the checkpoint
> have been written to the datafiles by DBWn. "
If this assumption is correct it gets rid of that one uncomfortable floating change because it is not a change record but a checkpoint record.
