Yes, the bit about reading the manual! :-)

Read the *Legato Manual* that comes with Oracle8, it tells you how to restore the bootstrap (client index, media index and nsr res files) after a total system loss - which is what you are effectively simulating here. You might also want to download the full Legato Networker (as that is what LSM is) from Legato's web site in pdf format, I found them very useful.

You'd also need a copy of the Oracle database control file and a copy (or a network link to ) your RMAN recovery catalog, if you used one (recommended). Without one of these, RMAN has no index of what it backed up. This time, read the *Oracle8 Backup and Recovery* (RMAN section) in detail.
