You are probably using Slackware Linux. A change to RedHat 5.1 (or 5.2) eliminates this problem. I am speaking of my own personal experience, not intending to promote RedHat. I have been a Slackware user for a long long time since kernel 1.x.x. But to get a more trouble-free install of Oracle, you'd better switch to RedHat. It was said (unofficially) that Oracle for Linux is more "tailored" to fit in with RedHat linux distribution. I am sure you can make it work just like many others who are using a different distribution, but I would not waste my time debugging it.
