Can't commit changes to table

I ran a SQL script to change a column in a table from CHAR(6) to CHAR(*). I run a "desc" after and no changes have taken place. I'm assuming a rollback occurred even though I appended "commit" to the end of the script. What would cause a commit to not occur in this type of situation ?
