Actually, the sort segments are owned by SYS. For Oracle8, it was recently pointed out here that there is a fixed view called v$sort_usage that tells you who is sorting.

In Oracle7, if a user is sorting, you will see file I/O events in their entry in v$session_wait against the datafiles that constitute the TEMP tablespace.
