Instance/DB Creation problems

How do you create an Oracle 8.0.4 instance and then the database associated with it?

I've tried following the documentation, but it seems to run me in circles. I know that my steps are:
(1) Create the instance - I did that with ORADIM80 (on NT 4.0 workstation).
I called it GD4
(2) Modified the LISTENER.ORA file to listen for the GD4 instance.
(3) Created an INITGD4.ORA file to have the necessary startup parameters.

It's at this point that I get stuck. I can't get into Enterprise Manager using this service name. (The DB doesn't exist yet, so the Net8 has nothing to connect to, so it never finalizes this entry in its file).

I try going into SVRMGR30, but I again run into the problem that there are no SQL*Net services to this instance yet. Doing a CONNECT INTERNAL asks me for a password, but none of the Oracle defaults seem to satisfy it.

The Enterprise Manager documentation says that to start an instance, you have to get into the Startup Database dialog box of Enterprise Manager, but that box appears to be in the Backup Manager which I can't get into because I have no SQL*Net service going to it.

I could go on in circles here and never make it to the center. What am I doing wrong? Received on Thu Feb 04 1999 - 11:52:18 CST
