Have seen this on oracle 7 & 8 under aix, too. It is usually a drag b/c
when we kill a session it is for a reason such as having become
disconnected from its controlling terminal yet still holding resource
locks thus blocking other processes. In a heavy oltp production
environment shutdowns during business hours are not a good option; but
usually after a while (up to 30 min or so) the zombie ultimately goes
away. Assume that this is due to oracle doing cleanup, freeing locks,
rolling back transactions, etc. Or maybe it just takes PMON a while to get
around to doing this.
