Renaming Fields in an Oracle Table

Can someone give me some insight into the process that is required to change a field name in an Oracle Table? I have looked at the 'alter table' command, but that does not seem to have the functions needed. Someone has told me I need to drop and recreate the tables to do this. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
