Question about archive log?

I have a question for those who work with Oracle Database V7 or above  with Windows NT.
Did you ever have a system problem such as performance when you turn on archive log?  It seems that whenever I turn on archive
log.  For some reasons, it takes a while to access the database via SQLPlus.  Any response will be appreciated except flames.
